BATES FIELD HOCKEY BLANKS GORDON, 3-0

LEWISTON, Maine-- The Bates College field hockey team (4-3) recorded its third shutout of the season today, defeating the visiting Gordon College Fighting Scots (6-2), 3-0, on John Bertram Field.

Bates got all the scoring they would need six and a half minutes into the contest when sophomore forward Johie Farrar (W. Paris, Maine) intercepted a clearing attempt and fired it home from just inside the circle. The Bobcats dominated the first half, outshooting Gordon, 13-0, but were unable to increase their lead until the second stanza.

Junior Leslie Moser (Adamant, Vt.) notched her first goal of the season with just over 27 minutes left in the game, while sophomore Julia Price (Mansfield, Mass.) blasted home a rebound 11 minutes lated for some insurance. Bates goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) made two fine saves in Gordon's best flurry of the afternoon with 15 minutes left on the clock to preserve the shutout. Gordon rookie Brianna Riddell (Medford, Mass.) had 14 saves in the losing effort.

Bates next plays at NESCAC rival Tufts at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1. Gordon travels to New York to face Union College at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
