BATES FIELD HOCKEY DROPS SEASON FINALE, 4-1, AT CONN. COLLEGE

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Bates College field hockey team (7-7, 2-7 NESCAC) saw its 2000 season come to a close today with a 4-1 loss at Connecticut College (8-6, 4-5 NESCAC). The Bobcats would have clinched a berth in the inaugural NESCAC tournament with a victory.

The Camels scored first early in the first half on a goal by rookie Emily Huffman (Oklahoma City, Okla.), but Bates rallied to tie the score with 11:07 remaining in the stanza on a goal by rookie midfielder Anie Schauer (Louisville, Ky.), her third of the season. Classmate Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) added her first career assist on the play.

The first part of the second half was a defensive struggle before the Camels scored the game winner with 18:40 on the clock on a goal by junior Molly McAuliffe (Yarmouthport, Mass.). Despite a 13-11 edge on penalty corners, the Bobcats were unable to equalize before Connecticut College scored an insurance goal by Patty Peters (Rosemont, Pa.) with 4:44 left.

Bates senior Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) made 13 saves in goal in the losing effort, while Conn. College sophomore Katie Stern (Portsmouth, R.I.) picked up the win with nine stops.
