BATES FALLS TO AMHERST IN NESCAC OPENER, 1-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College field hockey team lost for the first time on John Bertram Field, falling 1-0 to the visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs.

The first half was evenly played, with neither team able to convert on several good opportunities. In the second stanza, Amherst (3-0, 2-0 NESCAC) enjoyed a 7-2 advantage on penalty corners, which led to the only goal of the game. With 9:22 on the clock, senior midfielder Gretchen Bowe (Hampstead, N.H.) blasted home a rebound that resulted from the Lord Jeffs' final penalty corner of the day. Bates (2-1, 0-1 NESCAC) had a couple of opportunities to answer, but could not find the back of the net.

Bates goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) had several acrobat stops among her 10 saves on the day despite suffering the loss. Amherst's Beth Sensing (Hockessin, Del.) had five saves for her first shutout of the season. This was the first-ever meeting between Bates and Amherst in field hockey.
