UMaine-Farmington 12, Bates 7

The Bobcats travelled to Farmington on the 18th to take on the hosting University of Maine at Farmington Beavers. In the first game of the double header Bates sent their senior tri-captain Dan Chisholm (Westfield, Mass.) to the mound. Chisholm went the distance allowing only three runs on six hits over seven innings to pick up his second win of the season. The Bobcats took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of sixth when the Beavers rallied to plate three runs of their own. The Bobcats responded with six runs in the top of the seventh on three home runs by junior Scott McAuliffe (Concord, N.H.), senior Mike Voelker (Coventry, R.I.), and sophomore Frost Hubbard (Walpole, Mass.). Chisholm struck out the first two hitters he faced in the bottom of the seventh, then jammed a Beaver hitter inside resulting in a ground ball back to him to end the game. With the 10-3 victory Bates now stands at 5-8. In the second game the Bobcats found themselves short on pitching. Sophomore Drew Blicharz (Rutland, Vt.) started the game but had to leave in the second after hurting his arm. The Bobcats went through three other pitchers in the second inning on their way to allowing nine walks and three hits resulting in nine Beaver runs in the inning. First-year student Kevin Walsh (Wakefield, Mass.) came in to stop the bleeding for the Bobcats, pitching four and a third innings allowing only two earned runs. Offensively, Bates scored one run in the fifth when sophomore Tom Rollins (Washington, D.C.) led off with a triple and scored on a Hubbard RBI single. In the sixth inning, junior Shirl Penney (Eastport, Maine), first-year Christian Galligher shortstop (Mont Vernon, N.H.), and Rollins all had back to-back singles. Penney scored on Rollins' hit, while Galligher and Rollins came home on a two RBI double by McAuliffe. The Bobcats needed eight runs in the seventh but came up with only three to end the game with a 12-7 loss. Bates is now 5-9.
