Bowdoin 17, Bates 7

(Taken from a Bowdoin College press release) The Bowdoin College baseball team sent 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored eight runs, breaking open a 9-5 ball game to beat CBB rival Bates, 17-7. The Polar Bears took advantage of four hits, two walks and two errors to give pitcher John Perry (Biddeford, Maine) some breathing room in the top of the ninth and earn the victory.

Bowdoin (14-8-1) struck in the first as S.J. Baxter (Washington, D.C.) walked before scoring on a single by John Paquet (Wells, Maine) and an error - one of six by Bates (7-10) - by the rightfielder. Dave DeCew (Newton, Mass.) followed with the first of his four RBI on the afternoon by beating out an infield single to plate Paquet.

The Polar Bears would slowly build on the lead, scoring three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and one each in the sixth and seventh for a 9-1 bulge. The Bobcats made it interesting in the top of the eighth as Drew Blicharz (Rutland, Vt.) stepped to the plate with the base loaded and uncorked his first homer of the season to cut the Bowdoin edge to 9-5.

Perry, who came on in the fifth for starter Todd Bersaglieri (Oakland, Calif.), improves his record to 4-2 while Kevin Walsh (Wakefield, Mass.) drops to 0-2 with the loss.
