BOWDOIN HOLDS OFF BATES RALLIES FOR 8-7 WIN

(Taken from a Bowdoin College Press release) BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin College senior Dave DeCew (Newton, Mass.) set a new school record for hits in a season, going 4-for-5 on Tuesday afternoon, helping the Polar Bears defeat Bates, 8-7.

Bates (5-13) started strong as Austin Philbin (Clinton, Mass.) led off the game with a double and came home on a Jason Coulie (Machester, N.H.) single. After stealing second, Coulie scored on one of Ben Bines' (Lexington, Mass.) three doubles on the afternoon. Bowdoin (9-15) answered in the bottom of the first Greg Lovely (Milton, Mass.) reached on a bunt single and was plated on a triple by DeCew. John Paquet (Wells, Maine) laced a single to right to tie the score.

The Bobcats scored two runs in the second and another in the third to build a 5-2 lead and chase Bowdoin starter Jeff Molles (W. Warwick, R.I.). Scott Jamieson (Marshfield, Mass.) came on in relief, scattering eight hits over the next six innings and allowing just one earned run as the Polar Bear offense took over.

Bowdoin scored one run in the fifth on a Joe Nicastro (Gloucester, Mass.) RBI double and then plated three more runs in the sixth with four singles to take a 6-5 lead. Holding a 7-5 advantage in the eighth, Bates took advantage of a Polar Bear blunder to cut the lead to one, 7-6. Bowdoin got a run back in eighth when Nicastro led off the inning with a triple and scored on a squeeze play as Lovely provided a perfect bunt.

The Bobcats plated one run in the ninth, but stranded two of their 12 runners on the day. Jamieson (2-2) picks up the win in relief while Kevin Walsh (Wakefield, Mass.) suffers the setback to drop to 1-3.
