WORCESTER STATE SWEEPS BATES, 13-0 & 7-6

SANDWICH, Mass. — In their first games played up north, the Bates College baseball team was swept by 2001 ECAC finalists Worcester State. The Bobcats fell 13-0 in the opener before extending the Lancers to extra innings in the nightcap before losing, 7-6.

Worcester State (10-2) used their number one pitcher in the opening game after his scheduled appearance from earlier in the week got rained out. The Bobcats managed just five hits in the opener while striking out 11 times. WSC led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and never looked back.

Bates (2-2-1) got on the scoreboard first in the second game on a sacrifice fly by sophomore SS Nate Maxwell (Newport, Vt.) to drive in sophomore CF Rob Maguire (Wayland, Mass.), who led off the inning with a double. The Lancers responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a pair of doubles. The Bobcats went back on top with a pair of home runs: a solo shot by rookie 2B Adam Taranto (Sudbury, Mass.) and a two-run job by senior RF John Merriman (Clinton, Mass.) two batters later that gave Bates a 4-2 lead.

WSC scored two in the fifth to tie the game, but Taranto added two more RBI out of the ninth spot in the order in the top of the sixth. A single by Lancer All-American Eric Swedberg and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth tied the game again. Maxwell led off the seventh with a single, but the Bobcats could not get him home, while senior Shane Delaney (Needham, Mass.) retired the side in order in the bottom half to send the game into extra innings. Bates was held of the scoreboard in the top of the eighth and Worcester State loaded the bases with one out against Delaney and Ben Megrian (Newton, Mass.) before scoring the winning run on a suicide squeeze.
