BATES TOPS WILLIAMS IN OPENER
Bobcats hand NESCAC final four team 6-2 loss, fall in game two

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — In their final doubleheader against a NESCAC opponent this season, in Game One, the Bates hurlers silenced a Williams team that had scored 15 runs the day before in clinching a conference tournament berth against Amherst, 6-2. The Ephs woke up in the second contest, taking a 19-6 decision.

Bates (13-16-1) got another strong pitching performance from rookie Mike Kinsman (Yarmouth, Maine), who allowed four hits and two earned runs in four innings, striking out four and walking just one. Junior Chris Gwozdz (Cheshire, Conn.) and rookie John Furbush (So. Portland, Maine) breezed through the Williams order in the final three innings. Gwozdz allowed a leadoff single in the fifth, but started a double play himself against the next batter. Furbush came on in the seventh and retired the Ephs with an easy grounder to third and a pair of huge strike outs, one looking and one swinging to end the game.

Williams (22-11) scored without a hit in the botoom of the first, but Bates tied the game on an RBI double by senior C Ben Donaldson (Lamoine, Maine). The Ephs reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame, but Bates tied it again in the top of the fifth on rookie DH Nate Reid's (Greenfield, Mass.) RBI single in his first start of the season. The first four batters reached base in the sixth inning, with sophomore SS Nate Maxwell (Newport, Vt.) driving in the eventual winning run on a bases-loaded single. Classmate 3B Jeff Shouldice (Pittsfield, Mass.) laid down a successful suicide squeeze for the fourth run and Reid and senior LF Jason Pinkham (Milbridge, Maine) also picjed up RBI in the inning.

Bates scored first in game two, as sophomore CF Rob Maguire(Wayland, Mass.) tripled and scored on Maxwell's single. Williams scored four runs in the bottom of the inning as the Ephs hit for the cycle in the first four batters. The Bobcats cut the lead to 4-3 in the second on a Williams error and an RBI groundout by sophomore 3B John O'Neill (Cumberland, R.I.), but Williams' seven runs in the third and seven more in the fifth gained the hosts the split. Senior John Merriman (Clinton, Mass.) did add his fourth home run of the season.
