BOBCATS SNAP SKID, SWEEP UMPI 14-2, 8-1

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Bates College baseball team snapped a six-game losing streak yesterday with a doubleheader sweep of Maine-Presque Isle. The sweep was the Bobcats' third of the season and gave Bates its winningest season since 1992.

Bates (12-14-1) got a pair of complete game performances on the mound from rookie John Furbush (So. Portland, Maine) and sophomore Shawn Kingman (Cummaquid, Mass.). Furbush went six innings in the 14-2 opener, a game that was halted after the sixth inning because of the 10-run rule. He struck out 10 Owls in the process, including seven straight outs between the second and fourth innings. The Bobcats took control early as sophomore CF Rob Maguire (Wayland, Mass.) belted his fifth home run of the season to lead off the game. Four Bates players recorded more than one RBI in the first game, paced by sophomore 2B Owen Miehe (Glen Rock, N.J.) who went 2-3 with a double and a sacrifice fly, rookie DH Adam Taranto (Sudbury, Mass.) who was 2-5 with three RBI and Maguire and sophomore 3B John O'Neill (Cumberland, R.I.) who had two RBI each.

Kingman struck out seven in his seven innings of work in the night cap, allowing just one earned run and six hits. The Bobcats pounced early again, scoring three in the top of the first on senior C Ben Donaldson's (Lamoine, Maine) RBI single and an UMPI error and another in the second on Donaldson's RBI double. Bates made the most of six Owl errors, scoring five unearned runs in the contest.
