UMF TAKES TWO FROM BATES, 1-0 AND 7-2

FARMINGTON, Maine — The Bates College baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference baseball games today, 1-0 and 7-2, at the University of Maine-Farmington.
Bates (10-14-1) dropped a pitcher's duel in the opener, spoiling a complete-game two-hitter by rookie starter Mike Kinsman (Yarmouth, Maine). The Beavers scored in the third inning on the Bobcats' only error of the contest, followed by a double from centerfielder James Writer. Bates had a hit in each of the first six innings, but only advanced one runner past first base, sophomore SS Nate Maxwell (Newport, Vt.), who doubled in the fourth inning. Kinsman tossed his third complete game in five starts this season, striking out four.

UMF (8-13) committed two errors in the first inning of game two, allowing rookie 2B Adam Taranto (Sudbury, Mass.) to break onto the board. The Beavers answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, on a pair of two-run home runs by Writer and catcher Tom Ventura off senior starter Shane Delaney (Needham, Mass.). Taranto walked with the bases loaded in the second, but Maine-Farmington shut the Bobcats down after that.
