Bates 9, UMaine-Farmington 1 BATES DEFEATS MAINE-FARMINGTON, 9-1, LEWISTON, Maine Bates College junior pitcher Billy Karz (Van Nuys, Cal.) scattered four hits and struck out 11 batters as the Bobcats defeated the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers, 9-1, in their home opener on Leahey Field today. Karz did not walk a batter in going the distance and giving Bates its first nine-inning complete-game victory since 1999. Bates (3-4-1) scored all the runs they would need in the third inning when sophomore DH Peter Klausmeyer (Belfast, Maine) belted his first collegiate home run to lead off the inning. Senior LF Jason Pinkham (Milbridge, Maine) followed with a single and sophomore CF Rob Maguire (Wayland, Mass.) homered to left-center two batters later. The home run was Maguire's second of the season. The Bobcats scored in every inning after the third, taking advantage of six Maine-Farmington errors to score four unearned runs. Maguire added an RBI single in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly in the eighth, driving home sophomore 2B Owen Miehe (Glen Rock, N.J.) both times, to finish with four RBI on the day. UMF (2-1) got one multiple-hit performance, from senior CF James Writer (Fletcher, Vt.), who doubled for the Beavers' only extra base hit. Senior hurler Pat Conway (Bedford, N.H.) took the loss for UMF, allowing four runs on eight hits in five full innings pitched. He also picked up the team's only RBI on a ground out in the eighth inning, spoiling Karz' shutout bid.
