BATES SWEEPS COLBY, IMPROVES TO 3-0 IN CBB PLAY

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Bates College baseball team (9-8-1) improved to 3-0 in the CBB abnd 4-4 in the NESCAC East Division by completing a three-game sweep of rival Colby College (7-12, 3-6) in Waterville, 7-6 in the first game and 12-6 in the second.

In Game One, Colby opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a Kevin Brunelle single and Jon Lord RBI single. Bates picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth after three consecutive singles and then Kevin Presbrey balked in a run. The Colby offense picked up five runs in the fourth inning when Eric Roy, Joseph Johnson and Lucas Cummings hit three straight singles to load the bases. David Prinstein drove in the first run with a RBI single, followed by a two run single from Jared Cushman and two run single from Matt Simard. Bates would match Colby's scoring output with five runs of their own in the top of the fifth. The Bobcats loaded the bases on singles from Jason Pinkham, Ben Donaldson and Drew McKenna. Adam Taranto then came through with a two run single, followed by a Nate Maxwell RBI single. The Bates got their two final scores in the inning off a Jeff Shouldice double. Bates got the go-ahead run in the sixth on a homerun from Rob Maguire.

Colby scored first again in Game Two, when Kevin Brunelle doubled in the first and scored on a groundout by Matt Simard. Bates picked up five runs in the second on a two run single from Jason Pinkham, an RBI double from Owen Miehe and a two run double from John Merriman. Colby would even up the score in the bottom of the inning. The Mules scored on a RBI single from David Prinstein followed by a RBI single from Michael Civitello. Prinstein scored on a RBI groundout from Vincent Domestico, and after stealing second base Civitello scored on an error. After Bates loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman, Pinkham delivered again with a bases clearing double. Bates picked up five runs in the seventh to put the game away.
