Bates 7, Colby 1 KINSMAN, DONALDSON LEAD BATES PAST COLBY, 7-1 LEWISTON, Maine Rookie pitcher Mike Kinsman (Yarmouth, Maine) tossed a complete game and senior catcher Ben Donaldson (Lamoine, Maine) hit a grand slam in the fifth inning today to lead the Bates College baseball team to a 7-1 NESCAC East victory over in state rival Colby College. It was the Bobcats' CBB conference opener. Bates (7-8-1, 2-4 NESCAC East) got all the runs they would really need in the first inning on an RBI double by sophomore 1B Drew McKenna (Middleboro, Mass.) and a run-producing ground out by rookie DH Adam Taranto (Sudbury, Mass.). The Bobcats tripled the lead in the fifth, loading the bases on a double, an error and a walk before Donaldson's big blast gave them a 6-0 lead. Donaldson deposited Colby hurler Brandon Royce's (Augusta, Maine) 3-2 pitch deep in left center field for his third home of the campaigm. It was Royce's second grand slam surrendered this season. Senior LF Jason Pinkham (Milbridge, Maine) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to close out the Bates scoring. Colby (7-10, 3-4 NESCAC East) scored their only run on three straight singles in the seventh inning with junior DH Joe Johnson (Northwood, Mass.) picking up the RBI. On the mound, Kinsman scattered seven hits over nine innings, striking out four and walking two. He allowed more than one base-runner in an inning just once, when the Mules scored their only run. Kinsman earned his first collegiate win with the Bobcats' second nine-inning complete game of the season. The two teams meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader in Waterville.
