BASEBALL DROPS NESCAC FINALE, 11-2, AT TUFTS

MEDFORD, Mass. (Taken from a Tufts University press release) — Rookie DH Greg Hickey (Medway, Mass.) went two for three with two runs batted in and classmate P Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, Ohio) pitched a complete game as the Tufts Jumbos capped off their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) season with a 11-2 victory over the visiting Bates Bobcats on Monday afternoon. With the win, the Jumbos improved their NESCAC East Division record to 10-2, 17-10-1 overall, while the Bobcats dropped to 0-12 in the conference, and 2-22 overall.

The visitors were the first to get on the scoreboard. First-year CF Rob Maguire (Wayland, Mass.) led off the top of the second inning with a double, which was the only extra-base hit allowed by Newsom in the game. Maguire then advanced to third after tagging up on a deep fly out, and later scored on a single by rookie 2B Ryan Waggoner (Long Beach, Calif.). The Bobcats tacked on a second run on an error to take an early, 2-0 lead.

The lead, however, lasted only a third of an inning. After Bates P Shawn Kingman (Cummaquid, Mass.) put runners on first and second on a walk and hit-batter, Tufts rookie 3B Dan LaPointe (Everett, Mass.) singled and drove in a run, putting the Jumbos on the board. Hickey then grounded out to the shortstop, scoring junior 1B Tim Ayres (Irvine, Calif.) in the process. The very next batter, senior C Joe Surprenant (Tewksbury, Mass.), drilled a double that scored LaPointe and put Tufts up for good, 3-2. Hickey added his second RBI in the third, when his two-out single scored Ayres.

Newsom had another impressive day at the mound to pick up his second win of the season. He allowed seven hits but only a single earned run while striking out two. He was helped out by his teammates in the field, who turned two double plays and made several unassisted outs.

The Jumbos scored 10 of their 11 runs in the second and third innings. After the third, the Bobcats were able to hold the Jumbos to only a single run on four hits. Bates junior P Shane Delaney (Needham, Mass.) did an excellent job in relief, allowing only one hit with two strikeouts in three innings, but by that point the game was already out of hand.
