BOBCATS LOSE TO ST. JOE'S IN 10 INNINGS, 5-3

BEVERLY, Mass. — Starting pitcher Kevin Walsh (Wakefield, Mass.) threw seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits and starting two double plays, but the Bobcats could not hang on in the late innings, dropping a 5-3 decision to St. Joseph's College in 10 in a game played at Endicott College.

Bates (0-11) scored one run each in the first and fourth innings without getting a hit. Rookie 3B Nate Maxwell (Newport, Vt.) led off the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second and scored two batters later on a Monk error. Junior DH John Merriman (Clinton, Mass.) walked with one out in the fourth and also stole seond and scored on an error.

St. Joe's (17-2) got their only runs off Walsh with one out in the fifth. The first came home on a sacrifice fly, while the other took advantage of an overthrow on the same play. The Monks scored three in the 10th inning when the Bobcats walked the bases loaded. After one run came home on a fielder's choice, SJC catcher Joe Holland hit a two-run double to provide some needed insurance, as senior captain Matt Pound (Santa Fe, N.M.) added an RBI single in bottom of the inning.
