BOBCATS DROP TWINBILL TO BOWDOIN

MEDFORD, Mass. --Playing their second and third CBB contests of the season, the Bates College baseball team dropped a pair of close contests to Bowdoin, 9-8 and 13-10, at Tufts University.

The Bobcats put together their two biggest offensive outputs of the season, collecting 25 hits in the twinbill. Senior RF Ben Bines (Lexington, Mass.) led the way, going 5-9 with four RBI and four runs scored. Bines homered in both games, giving him a team-high four for the season. Senior SS Christian Galligher (Mont Vernon, N.H.) had his best day since recovering from an injury that kept him out for the season last year, going 4-8 with a double, two runs scored and 3 RBI.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Bobcats grabbed a 4-3 lead after Galligher and rookie LF Peter Klausmeyer (Belfast, Maine) each doubled in the second and a fifth-inning Bines three-run home run. Bowdoin plated five unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth and took that 8-4 lead into the seventh. Bates responded with four runs in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of three straight Polar Bear walks after rookie 3B Nate Maxwell (Newport, Vt.) led off with a single. Classmate Rob Maguire (Wayland, Mass.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Galligher tied the game with a one-out single. Bates looked to reclaim the lead on a double by junior DH John Merriman (Clinton, Mass.), but a perfect throw nailed Galligher at the plate. Bowdoin loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning and scored the winning run on a single up the middle.

Bates took an early lead in game two when Bines singled with one out in the third, stole second advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a Bowdoin error. The Polar Bears took of Bates miscues in the third and fourth innings to score six unearned runs. The Bobcats clawed back in the top of the fifth on a lead-off homer by Bines, a sac fly by Galligher and an RBI single by Merriman to get back to 6-4. Bowdoin answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-4 lead and held on for the 13-10 victory.
