BASEBALL LOSES NESCAC OPENERS, 2-1 AND 7-0, AT TUFTS

(Taken from a Tufts University press release)

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Senior Zack Brown (Melrose, Mass.) and sophomore Steve Lapham (Newburyport, Mass.) pitched complete-game victories as the Tufts Jumbos swept a double-header from the Bates Bobcats in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) baseball action on Saturday afternoon. Tufts won the first game 2-1 and the second game 7-0.

Brown allowed seven hits in the opener, with junior 2B Pat Collins (Walpole, Mass.) doubling home sophomore C Ben Donaldson (Lemoine, Maine) for the only Bates run in the top of the second. Tufts sophomore RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, Mass,) tied the game in the bottom of the third with a run-scoring double. In the home fifth, Bates narrowly missed turning a double play and the Jumbos scored the eventual game winner on a bases-loaded walk by junior 2B Cory Dolich (Alameda, Calif.). In the nightcap, Lapham held the Bobcats to one hit over the first four innings as the Jumbos built a 6-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, Bates first-year Liam Ryan (Marblehead, Mass.) was thrown out at the plate trying to score to preserve Lapham's second shutout of the season. Tufts senior SS Mike Gray (Teaneck, N.J.) had two RBIs and the Jumbos twice executed double-steals, with junor LF Todd Boutwell (Woburn, Mass.) and freshman CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, Ore.) swiping home.

Tufts improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the league. Bates remained winless at 0-6 and 0-2 in the NESCAC.
