BATES PICKS UP FIRST NESCAC WIN IN DH SPLIT WITH COLBY

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Bates College baseball team picked up its first conference win of the season today, defeating CBB rival Colby in the second end of a doubleheader in Waterville.

In the opener, Colby first-year starter Dan Deacon (Rumford, R.I.) threw a complete game, walking one and striking out eight for an 8-4 Colby win. Shane Delany (Needham, Mass.) took the loss for the Bobcats. Andy Tripp (Saco, Maine), Jon Lord (Dublin, N.H.) and Matt Simard (Auburn, Maine) each hit home runs to further the Mules' cause. Bates senior Jason Coulie (Manchester, N.H.) went 2-3 with a double and an RBI in the game.

In the capper, Bates starter Ryan Weaver (Canton, Ohio) slowed the Mules down, giving up just three runs on seven hits in five-plus innings, en route to his first collegiate victory. Kevin Presbrey (Aurora, Ill.) suffered the loss. Coulie had another multi-hit game and two RBI at the plate, while pitching the final two innings for his second collegiate save. Classmate Drew Blicharz (Rutland, Vt.) had a big game as DH, going 2-4 with a pait of doubles and an RBI.
