The Bates College women, led by first-year forward Jolene ThurstonÕs (Post Mills, Vt.) career high 21 points, held off a late rally to sweep the season series from Bowdoin, 70-67
Both teams were even in the first half, playing to a 37-37 tie, with neither team establishing a lead of more than four points. Three minutes into the second stanza, the Bobcats went on a 21-8 run that extended a 44-42 lead to 65-50 with 7:14 remaining. Reminiscent of the teamsÕ earlier meeting in Brunswick, the Polar Bears mounted a comeback, allowing just one Bates field goal the rest of the way.
Thurston was fouled with 40 seconds to go and the Bobcat up three, it seemed a perfect chance to make it a two-possession game. Thurston committed a lane violation and lost her chance and Bowdoin came down and converted an offensive rebound to cut the lead to one. First-year guard Melissa LaPointe (salem, N.H.) came through with two free throws with 13.2 seconds remaining to ice the win.
Thurston led all players with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while classmates Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.) had 13 points and 11 boards. Bowdoin saw its 10-game winning streak snapped, while Bates improved to 5-0 in games decided by one basket.
Senior center Sarah Bonkovsky (Harvard, Mass.) grabbed 14 rebounds, putting her on top of the BobcatsÕ all-time list with 775 as Bates defeated the Middlebury College Panthers , 69-53.
The Bobcats opened the game with a 20-4 run with each of three players contributing two baskets. The Panthers climbed back into the game with runs of 10-4 and then 9-4 to end the half down 36-26. Middlebury scored the first seven points of the second half to get to 36-33, but a 3-pointer from Bates sophomore Amy Taylor (Orono, Maine) ended the run and got the Bobcats back on track, spurring a 14-6 run over the next six minutes which put the Bobcats up 50-39.
First-year forward Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.) led all players with 21 points and a season high 17 rebounds. Taylor had 11 points, while Thurston had 12. Bates, ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III New England womenÕs poll has now won 14 of their last 15 and is a perfect 8-0 at home. Their 18 wins surpasses last seasonÕs total of 17 as most in a season at Bates. Middlebury was ranked 10th in last weeksÕ NCAA poll. Four of the PanthersÕ six losses this season have some in the state of Maine.

Three Bowdoin College Polar Bears scored 20 points as they defeated the
host Bobcats , 90-72.
Four different players spurred an 11-1 run midway through the first half as Bowdoin turned a 20-18 deficit into a 29-21 lead which they never relinquished. The Polar Bears led at halftime, 42-34. Senior Mike Marsh (Manchester, Conn.) of Bates led all players with 11 points and nine boards.
Marsh scored four of the first six points of the half as the Bobcats sliced the lead to 44-40 after four minutes, but Bowdoin answered with 9-3 run of their own and never looked back.
Bowdoin hit 34 of 68 shots (50 percent) from the floor, compared the BobcatsÕ 28 of 77 (36 percent). The Polar Bears also had nine steals. Bates senior guard Matt Garvey (Amherst, Mass.) led all scorers with 24 points.
Garvey scored more than 30 points for the second straight game and the Bobcats routed the Middlebury College Panthers , 104-71.
The Bobcats opened up a 20-6 lead just over six minutes in to the game when Garvey hit for seven straight points. Middlebury cut the lead to as close as 10 points a couple of times in the first, but a 15-2 run end the half gave Bates a 53-29 lead. Garvey hit three 3-pointers plus three free throws in the course of 1:30 early in the second put Bates up by 30 points and they cruised to their second 100-point output of the season.
Garvey finished the game with 35 points and six assists, while senior Mike Marsh (Manchester, Conn.) added 16 points and 10 boards. Bates sophomore Andy Hall (Forestdale, Mass.) led all players with 12 rebounds. MiddleburyÕs leading scorer was held to two points on 0-for-9 shooting. The Bobcats outshot Middlebury 52 percent to 18 percent from 3-point range, thanks to GarveyÕs 8-for-12 performance.

Junior Justin Freeman (Franklin, N.H.) and teammate David Chamberlain (Wilton, Maine) took third and forth positions respectively in Men's 9.5 Freestyle persuit at theWilliams carnival held on 14th of February. Freeman finished with a time of 58:31.8, while classmate Chamberlain finished the race with a time of 58:47.8. The men's team was finished third in the freestyle event, behind UVM and Middlebury.
The women's nordic races that were scheduled for Friday were cancelled and were held on Saturday. In the women's 10k race, Katie Gould (Williamstown, Mass.) finished 14th with a time of 34:02.9 while Jennifer Bergeron (South Burlington, Vt.) and Beth Naylor all finished 18th and 19th respectively to place the team 4th in the event.
In the men's salom, Sean Clark(Raymond, Maine) finished 15th with a time of 1:31.35 while teammate Kina Pickett (South Woodstock, Vt.) finished second for the Bates team with a time of 1:32.37. In the giant salom event, Sandy Perrins (Placerville, Colo.) finished fourth with a time of 1:46.24 while teammate Sean Clark finished 11th with a time of 1:47.43. Bryce Hubner and Sam Anderson also finished the race in the top 25 position to give the team a leading edge over the hosts. The overall score for the men's giant salom event placed the Bobcats in an impressive third place.
In the women's giant slalom event, Sterling Tomkins finished the race in the 25th spot while teammates Lisa Loeffler and Paige Heller also finished in the top 30 place. In the women's salom, Loeffler finished in the 22nd spot with a time of 1:43.39 while Jennifer Horn and Nellie Peck finished 2nd and 3rd for Bates respectively.
2/28-3/1 Middlebury Carnival (EISA Championships)
On February 14th the women traveled to Yale to compete in the Howe Cup. In their opening match they played Tufts University. Seniors Lena Baldwin (Marion, Mass.), Kiersten Scarpati (Burlington, Conn.), Jennifer Gollan (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and first-year student Janice Michaels (Princeton, N.J.) all won their matches 3-0 and led the team to a 8-1 victory. After playing Tufts at 1:30 the women took on Franklin and Marshal at 6:00. This match proved to be much closer, but Bates pulled out a 5-4 victory. Winning matches for Bates were senior Kara Buckstaff (Oshkosh, Wis.), senior Lauren Cardonsky (New York, N.Y.), Scarpati, Michaels, and Gollan. On the 15th the women were up and ready to play after winning two matches the day before. Unfortunately for Bates so was Williams College and as a result Bates fell 2-7. Michaels and Gollan again won their matches for Bates. Williams would eventually win this flight and finish 9th in the nation. On the morning of the 16th at the women took onon Wesleyan . Despite many close games and matches the Bobcats fell 2-7. Senior Alysia Wurst and Michaels both won their matches for Bates.
This marked the end of the season for the Bobcats. Bates finished 12th in the country, their highest finish ever.
2/14-16 Howe Cup at Yale
Merrill Gym was the site of Tuesday's CBB match-up. In the men's meet
Bowdoin
came out strong in the 200 yard medley relay outscoring Bates 13-4. Bates
would answer though, led by sophomore Chris Orpilla (Seaside, Ca.) in the
1000 yard freestyle. Orpilla took first by over six seconds and teammate
Jason Fortin (West Hartford, Conn.) held on to take third. The strong
performance
in the 1000 allowed Bates to tie the score at 18. After junior Steve
Simmons
(Winter Park, Fla.) took second in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.45 and
sophomore
Damon Bowe (Houma, La.) swam away with first in a time of 2:05.3 in the
200 I.M. the team scores stood at Bowdoin 49, Bates 44. The stage was set
for sophomore David Burke (Andover, Mass.) in 1-meter diving. On this day
he would not disappoint as he took first with 244.85 points. That score
was a new school and pool record, and it made him the first ever Bates
diver to qualify for the NCAA national championships being held at the
University of Miami/Ohio this year on the 20-22 of March. After adding
in the divers permformance in the 1 meter, Bates once again was in the
lead at 58-53. They would not look back as they finished with 123 while
Bowdoin despite getting 13 points in the free relay fell five points
short
at 118. Helping bring home first down the stretch was Bowe again with
first
in the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.08, senior Chris Renyi (Wyckoff, N.J.)
with second in the 200 fly in 2:12.69, Simmons with first in the 500 yard
freestyle with a time of 5:11.78, Burke with another first place finish
in the 3 meter dive with 269.25 points, and Orpilla with first in the 200
meter breast with a time of 2:21.99
The women's team was hoping to mimic the performance of the men's team. They started out doing so as they like the men fell behind early in the 200 medley relay 13-4. After the 50 yard freestyle Bates found themselves down 54-19. Junior Denby Johnson took to the pool in the 200 I.M. in hope to narrow that margin; she would. Johnson swam to a 2:18.18 which was a first place time on this day. Sophomore Joanne Murphy (West Hartford, Conn.) followed with a first place finish of her own in the 1 meter dive with a score of 207.65. Just when the momentum appeared to be going Bate's way Bowdoin took 1-3 in both the 100 fly and backstroke. This would prove to be too much as Bowdoin went on to win 125-111. Other big finishes for Bates were Johnson in first in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 55.82, sophomore Liza Loughran (Middletown, N.Y.) with first in the 500 meter freestyle, Murphy with another first in the 3 meter dive with 202.75 points, and first-year Liz Fey (Westport, Conn.) with first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.44. The team outscored Bowdoin 15-2 in the 200 free relay as well.

Senior Paul Kolter's (Manchester, N.H.) performance was the highlight of the meet for the Bobcats for the meet turned out to be one in which points were very hard to come by in any event. Kolter threw the 35 weight 54'-10" and finished 3rd. That throw betters the qualifying standard by 9" and currently ranks him among the top five throwers in the country. Joining Kolter on the all New England team was first-year Matt Twiest (Albuquerque, N.M.) who recorded the Bobcat's highest finish with a second place finish in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:32.12. Other finishes that equaled a spot on the all New England team were senior Alec MacLachlan's (Newburyport, Mass.) forth place finish in the 500 meters with a time of 1:25.21, senior Steve Beardsley's (Melrose, Mass.) lifetime best time of 1:56.89 for fifth place in the 800, sophomore Bill McEvila's (Hartford, Conn.) 6th place finish in the 35 weight with a throw of 51'-9", junior Chris LeBlanc's (Peacedale, R.I.) first ever pentathlon totaling 2972 for sixth place, sophomore Peter Beeson's (Novelty, Ohio) sixth place finish in the pole vault with a vault of 14'-0", and first year Mike Danahy's (South Windsor, Conn.) personal best time of 8:52.65 in the 3000 meter run allowed him to finish sixth. Bate's 4 X 800 meter relay team comprised of first year student Trevor Emory (Rosemont, Penn.), sophomore Chris Terry (Needham, Mass.), Beardsley, and Twiest improved their seasonal best time to 8:07.48 good for fourth place.
The Bobcats had home turf advantage as they hosted the State of Maine Championships this year. The field was a strong one that included CBB rivals Colby and Bowdoin. Unfortunately at the end of competition both would finish in front of the Bobcats, but the women had many great performances including 20 New England Division III qualifying times..
Sophomore Adelia Myrick (Kodiak, Alaska) has yet another honor in her trophy case as she amazingly tied the school record to one hundredth of a second (3:02.57). That time, her best of the season, qualifies her for both the ECAC and Open New England Championships. The break through performance of the day however goes to first year Kate Burakowski (Derry, N.H.) in the 1500 meter run. Burakowski stunned everyone including her competition as she came from behind on the last turn to clinch victory by four tenths of a second in 4:58.75. Her time was her best of the season, and it qualifies Burakowski for the ECAC meet. Bates' third state champion was junior Abbey Phelps (Chester, N.H.) who won the 3000 meters by a margin of six seconds in 10:48.57. The time was also Phelps' best of the year and it also qualified her for the ECAC meet. The Bobcats were not done yet, as they added a fourth champion in the form of senior Heather Bumps (South China, Maine). Bumps dominated the 20 pound weight field as she won by over an impressive four feet. Her throw of 44' 11 3/4" gives her a ECAC berth as well as qualifying her provisionally for the NCAA championships.
Other strong performances for the bobcats included senior Ilse Abusamra (Brentwood, N.H.) in the 5000 meters. Her fourth place finish with a time of 19:19.57 qualified her for the ECAC meet. Senior Sara Gill (Rapid City, S.D.) saved her best 400 meters of the year for the home track fans as she ran a time of 63.47 good for second place.
