The Bates College Woman's Basketball team (15-3) defeated
Maine-Farmington
(14-3) for the first time in five games spanning the last two seasons.
For the third time this season, the Bobcats rallied from a 10-point
deficit
in the second half to up their record to 4-0 in games decided by three
points or less. Trailing by a score of 38-29 at the half the Bobcats came
out in the second to rally to within one with just 1.6 seconds remaining
and the ball to be inbounded by Bates. UMF coach Len Mcphee tried to call
his last time out, but was denied the opportunity by the officials.
Melissa
LaPointe (Salem, N.H.) inbounded the ball to senior captain Sarah
Bonkovsky
(Harvard, Mass.) to the right of the lane, just inside the free throw
line.
Bonkovsky hit a turn-around jumper with .4 left on the clock and was
fouled.
She sealed the comeback with a free-throw for the 65-63 win. Bonkovsky
lead all scorers with 18 points, while first-year Emily King (Lebanon,
N.H.), ECAC rookie of the week for ending February 9th, added 12 points
and 12 rebounds.
The women traveled to St. Joseph's to take on the host Monks on
Wednesday.
The Bobcats took advantage of 20 Saint Joseph's turnovers, mostly in the
second half, to add to a 42-41 half time score to finish with a 89-77
win.
King lead the way for the Bobcats with 20 points and 17 rebounds. Colleen
McCrave (Walpole, Mass.) netted 18 points and had six steals in the
winning
effort.
The Bantams of Trinity came to town on Saturday bringing their 12-2
record
with them. The Bantams were coming in off a win at Colby from the night
before, and Bates was looking to uphold the CBB pride. Bates did so in
a big way as they jumped out to a commanding 48-30 half-time lead. The
Bobcats were dominated on the boards throughout the game (64-40), but the
Bantams could only manage 32 % shooting, while the Bobcat press caused
23 turnovers. The end result was an impressive 99-73 victory for the
Bobcats.
Bonkovsky and King led the way for the Bobcats as they had 24 and 22
points
respectively. The two also combined for 24 rebounds on the night. The win
moves Bates to 15-3 on the season.

The men hosted the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers on Monday.
In the first five minutes of action Marsh nailed his 1,000th point
becoming
the 20th player in school history to do so. Bates took a 38-33 lead into
the lockerroom at half-time, but thanks in part to Daren Meader of UMF
hitting 10 straight baskets in the second half en route to picking up 23
second half points the lead collapsed. The final score was UMF 86 and
Bates
81. Marsh lead the Bobcats with 24 points while Matt Garvey (Amherst,
Mass.)
and Jesse Strandberg (Steep Falls, Maine). First-year Jesse Lynch (Mount
Vernon, N.H.) was 50% from three-point land as he went 4-8 good for 12
points.
The Bobcats traveled to St. Joseph's College on Wednesday. St. Joseph's
made use of 25 Bates turnovers to take a commanding 53-34 lead at the
half.
The Monks never looked back as they defeated Bates 88-67. Marsh once
again
lead the way as he scored 23 on 9-15 shooting. Standberg added 10 points
in 20 minutes of work.
At Alumni Gymnasium on Saturday the Bobcats played host to a strong
Trinity
College squad (10-7). The score was deadlocked at 39 apiece at halftime.
In the second half after seven lead changes and three ties in the last
10 minutes of the game, Trinity sophomore forward John Mulfinger
(Franklin
Lakes, N.J.) hit the Bantams' only four free throws of the second half
in the last 13.2 seconds to give the visitors an 84-80 win. Mulfinger
would
finish the game with 31 points. For the Bobcats Garvey recovered from his
scoring drought with a game high 34 points on 10-28 shooting. Strandberg
added 17 points and 8 rebounds.

In the Men's 15k junior Justin Freeman (Franklin, N.H.) set the pace
for the weekend by giving Bates a fifth place finish with a time of
49:56.0.
Teammate and classmate David Chamberlain (Wilton, Maine) finished in 13th
place with a time of 51:19.2. In the women's 10k it was senior Katie
Gould
(Williamstown, Mass.) again as she turned in an impressive time of
42:07.5
good for 5th place. Senior Becky Steer (Anchorage, Alaska) finished in
17th place with a time of 43:50.5. The women's and men's 3 x 5km and 3
x 10km relay teams finished in 3rd place. The men picked up a win over
rival Dartmouth, while the women defeated UNH and Middlebury.
In Giant Slalom action it was sophomore Paige Heller (Wilmington, Mass.)
finishing first for the Bates Women with a time total time of 2' 16.62
placing her 28th overall. First year Sterling Tomkins (Aspen, Colo.) was
32nd overall with a time of 2' 17.42. For the men in the giant slalom
first
year Bryce Hubner (Manchester, Vt.) was 17th overall with a total time
of 2' 06.68, while senior Sandy Perrins (Placerville, Colo.) finished
25th
overall with a time of 2' 07.89. Tomkins was again Bates' top finisher
in the slalom with a total time of 1' 48.64 while Hubner picked up a 14th
place finish with a total time of 1'33.57 in the men's slalom.
2/14-15 at Williams Carnival
The Bobcats hosted Bowdoin on the fifth and with not much success. The women fell to Bowdoin 8-1 for the second time this season. The Bobcats traveled to the home of the White Mules, Colby College, on Friday and took home a victory 6-3.
2/14-16 Howe Cup at Yale
The men visited the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College on Wednesday after coming of an impressive 9-0 victory over NESCAC rival Connecticut College. Bates had been successful in their previous meeting this year, but this time Bowdoin came out as the victors 6-3. The Bobcats had not lost two matches in a row this season, and that mark still stands as they beat Colby College 7-2 at home on the 7th. The victory pushed Bates' record to 16-3 and broke the school record for most wins in a season. Winning their matches 3-0 for Bates were senior captain Pat Cosquer (Westfield, N.J.), junior Sandy Weymouth (Hingham, Mass.), and first-year Christian Stallkamp (Haverford, Pa.).
2/21-23 NISRA Team Tournament at Princeton
Both the men's and the women's teams easily defeated Connecticut College
Feb. 8, but both lost narrow decisions to Trinity, with the men falling
by one point.
The men defeated Conn College, 78-35, but lost to Trinity, 57-56. They trailed the whole meet against the Bantams, at times by as many as 25 points. Trailing 52-27 heading into the last four events, the Bobcats took 29 of the final 34 points to fall just short. Leading the comeback effort were sophomore Chris Orpilla (Seaside, Calif.), who won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.20 and classmates David Burke (Andover, Mass.) and Corey Smith (W. Hartford, Conn.) who took first and second in both diving event. Burke's mark of 268.95 in the one-meter event was a school record and an NCAA Championship qualifying mark. He still needs one more qualification to become the first Bates diver in history to reach nationals. Finally, the team of first-year swimmer Paul Urbancyzk sophomore Todd McCoy, junior Steve Simmons and senior Ty Kaliski won the 200-yard freestyle medley, but the squad fell just short. Simmons also took home a win in the 200 individual medley, while sophomore Damon Bowe (Houma, La.) won the 100 butterfly.
The women topped Conn. College 6-52 and lost to Trinity 69-44. Junior Denby Johnson (Chanhassen, Minn.) won three events, the 200 freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke and butterfly. First-year swimmer Liz Fey (Westport, Conn.) took the 200 indivdual medley, and 100 breaststroke.
2/11 vs. Bowdoin
For the first time since 1983 Bates College has brought back first place in the state championship. Despite a well rounded field the Bobcats were victorious by scores of Bates 69, Bowdoin 64, Colby 40, and USM 10. The victory at the state meet was one of head coach Al Fereshetian's and the team's season objectives.
The Bobcats once again showed their dominance in the weight categories as they took 1-4 in the 35 pound weight and first in the shot put. Senior Paul Kolter (Manchester, N.H.) got the guys fired up as he improved his NCAA National Championship qualifying distance with a throw of 53-1 to take first in the weight. The come from behind win of the day went to sophomore Bill McEvila (Hartford, Conn.) who won the Shot Put by 1/2 inch on the last throw of the meet. McEvila moved from third to first with his effort and the competition could only watch.
First-year Matt Twiest (Albuquerque, N.M.) qualified provisionally for the NCAA's with a first place finish in the 1500 meters in a time of 3:57.61. Twiest was an ironman as he won the 1000 meters as well with a time of 2:35.87. Sophomore Peter Beeson (Novelty, Ohio) couldn't have picked a better time to have the performance of a lifetime as he cleared 14 feet on his first attempt to take first in the meet and remain undefeated on the season. The mid-distance men took to the track to record some impressive times for the Bobcats. Two of Bates' men finished the 800 meters in less than two minutes. Senior Steve Beardsley (Melrose, Mass.) led ran away with first place with a time of 1:57.34, and almost as impressive was the personal best time of 1:59.85 good for second place by sophomore Chris Terry (Needham, Mass.) First year Kevin Stroman (New York, N.Y.) improved his triple-jump to 41-10 in taking second place.
Bates wrapped up the regular season with an 11-4 record. The meet was one that boasted 21 personal bests for the Bobcats individually. It will serve as momentum for the championship season that is just around the corner.
2/15 New England Division III Championships at MIT
The Bobcats had home turf advantage as they hosted the State of Maine Championships this year. The field was a strong one that included CBB rivals Colby and Bowdoin. Unfortunately at the end of competition both would finish in front of the Bobcats, but the women had many great performances including 20 New England Division III qualifying times..
Sophomore Adelia Myrick (Kodiak, Alaska) has yet another honor in her trophy case as she amazingly tied the school record to one hundredth of a second (3:02.57). That time, her best of the season, qualifies her for both the ECAC and Open New England Championships. The break through performance of the day however goes to first year Kate Burakowski (Derry, N.H.) in the 1500 meter run. Burakowski stunned everyone including her competition as she came from behind on the last turn to clinch victory by four tenths of a second in 4:58.75. Her time was her best of the season, and it qualifies Burakowski for the ECAC meet. Bates' third state champion was junior Abbey Phelps (Chester, N.H.) who won the 3000 meters by a margin of six seconds in 10:48.57. The time was also Phelps' best of the year and it also qualified her for the ECAC meet. The Bobcats were not done yet, as they added a fourth champion in the form of senior Heather Bumps (South China, Maine). Bumps dominated the 20 pound weight field as she won by over an impressive four feet. Her throw of 44' 11 3/4" gives her a ECAC berth as well as qualifying her provisionally for the NCAA championships.
Other strong performances for the bobcats included senior Ilse Abusamra (Brentwood, N.H.) in the 5000 meters. Her fourth place finish with a time of 19:19.57 qualified her for the ECAC meet. Senior Sara Gill (Rapid City, S.D.) saved her best 400 meters of the year for the home track fans as she ran a time of 63.47 good for second place.
