Women's Basketball (1-1) Takes Second at UMF Tournament; Bonkovsky

Senior captain Sarah Bonkovsky (Harvard, Mass.), became the seventh
female player in Bates basketball history to score 1,000 points as the
Bobcats defeated the Thomas College Terriers in the first round of the
Maine Farmington Invitational, 81-49.
Bonkovsky, a 5-11 center, reached the milestone when she hit a pair of
free throws with 2:52 remaining in the game. She was the leading scorer
in the game with 18 points on five-for-17 shooting, including
three-for-six from 3-point range. Bonkovsky pulled down seven rebounds,
and had three steals and three assists.
In their first game of the season, Bates dominated from the beginning,
not allowing Thomas a field goal for the first nine minutes of the game
to establish a 22-3 lead which they extended to 40-19 at halftime. Other
standouts for the Bobcats were sophomore guards Colleen McCrave (Walpole,
Mass.) who nearly recorded her second career triple-double with 16
points, 10 rebounds and nine steals, and A.T. Taylor (Orono, Maine) who
had 15 points and six rebounds
In the championship game, the Bobcats fell to one of the strongest
opponents they will see this season, the host Maine-Farmington Beavers,
73-61. Despite shooting just 33 percent from the floor in the first half,
the Bobcats trailed just 33-30 at the break. They came out strong to
start the second, going on a 15-8 run to take a 45-41 lead five minutes
in. The Beavers answered, though, with an 11-0 run of their own, taking a
52-45 advantage they would not relinquish. Bonkovsky and Taylor, who were
named to the All-Tournament team finishd with 21 points and eight rebound
apiece, but they were the only Bobcats in double figures.

Women's Squash (1-1) Splits at Middlebury
After falling to the host Middlebury Panthers, 6-3, in their opening
match, the women's squash team rebounded with a victory over Tufts by the
same score in their second match. Leading the way for the Bobcats were a
trio of seniors who won both matches: No. 3 player Alysia Wurst (New
Canaan, Conn.), who won both matches in four games, No. 4 Katie McQuilkin
(Cambridge, Mass.), who won six straight games, four by five points or
more, and No. 9,Rebecca Shankman (New Rochelle, N.Y.), who picked up the
Bobcats tightest win of the day, 10-8, 5-9, 8-10, 10-9, 9-6 against
Tufts.

Men's Squash (5-0) Opens Strong
At Williams, the men's squash team got off to a fantastic start,
defeating Fordham, 8-1; Columbia, 7-2, Hamilton 6-3, Vassar, 5-4,
Haverford, 9-0. (Individual scores not available)

Swimming (M & W, 1-0) Sweeps Clark
The men's and women's swim teams opened the season successful with a
sweep at Clark University. The men took a 142-94 decision, while the
women had a much closer match, winning 130-112.
The men had a pair of multiple winners. senior Tatsuya Sato (Tokyo,
Japan) won the 100 and 200-yard freestyle with times of 50.43 seconds
and 1:55.75, respectively. Sophomore diver Dave Burke (Andover, Mass.)
swept the diving events, scoring 214.05 in the 1-meter event and 228.9 in
the 3-meters. The Bobcats also received victories from sophomore Damon
Bowe (Houma, La.) in the 200 individual medley, junior Steve Simmons
(Winter Park, Fla.) in the 200 butterfly and sophomore Chris Orpilla
(Seaside, Calif.) in the 200 breaststroke.
The women's meet went back and forth for much of the day, with neither
team getting more than 20 points ahead. Heading into the final two races
of the day, the Bobcats trailed 104-102. They took 28 of the next 32
points to win the meet, 130-112. In the 200 breaststroke, first-year
swimmer Elizabeth Fey (Westport, Conn.) and senior captain Jennifer
Weiers (Indiana, Pa.) finished in the top two places (2:39.39 and
2:40.54) to give the Bobcats a nine-point lead. The 200 freestyle relay
team of sophomores Elizabeth Loughran (Middletown, N.Y.) and Wendy
Zimmerman (Denver, Colo.), senior Dawn Bilodeau (Lewiston, Maine) and
junior Denby Johnson (Chanhassen, Minn.) cemented the win finishing in a
time of 1:46.81. Johnson and Loughran also picked up a pair of individual
wins; Johnson took the 200 freestyle (2:02.12) and 200 backstroke
(2:17.26), while Loughran won the 500 and 1000 freestyle (5:32.58 and
11:30.85).
