The Bobcats outscored their opponents by an average of 39 points per game this week in wins over Thomas (86-45, Jan. 13), New England College (114-46, Jan. 15), Hamilton (88-55, Jan. 18), and Skidmore (82-67, Jan. 19). In the win against NEC, senior captain Sarah Bonkovsky (Harvard, Mass.) scored her 1,167th career point to pass Lisa Kelley '86 and become the College's all-time leading scorer.
At Thomas on Jan. 13, the Bobcats' press baffled the Terriers, enabling them to jump out to a 55-25 halftime lead. The lead was sparked by sophomore forward Amy Taylor's (Orono, Maine) 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and sophomore guard Colleen McCrave's six steals.
In the second half, Bates extended its lead to 41 points by the time the final whistle blew. Taylor and first-year guard Jolene Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.) led the Bobcats with 16 points apiece. First-year guard Melissa Lapointe (Salem, N.H.) added 13 points and six assists off the bench, while McCrave finished with 11 points and eight steals.
In their home opener on Jan. 15, the Bobcats trampled New England College. Bates ran up a 12-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes, while the Pilgrims tried to figure out how to break the Bobcats relentless full-court press. The Pilgrims couldn't find the answer by half-time, and the Bates lead was 57-27.
The Bobcats opened the second half with a 24-4 run to put the game sufficiently out of reach. With 13:09 remaining in the half, Bonkovsky hit a pair of free throws to vault her over Kelley into first place on the Bates women's all-time scoring list. The record-setting did not stop with Bonkovsky. By the end of the game, the score stood at 114-46, a new single-game scoring record for Bates.
Bonkovsky led Bates with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Taylor added 25 points in only 22 minutes, and senior Susan Thompson (Hampden, Maine) added 17 points off the bench.
Against Hamilton on Jan. 18, the Bobcats' press once again led to turnovers by the opponents and easy points for Bates. McCrave led the defensive charge with 12 steals in the first half. Also, led by 12 points from Taylor and 10 from Lapointe, the Bobcats went on a 26-6 over the last eight minutes of the first half to extend a four point lead to 48-25.
In the second half, Taylor's hot shooting continued and she set a school record with five 3-pointers in the game. Taylor led all scorers with 27 points and McCrave finished with 13 steals and 10 points.
The Bobcats raced out of the gate against Skidmore on Jan. 19, building a 21-6 lead over the first 10 minutes. The Thoroughbreds jockeyed its way back late in the first half to narrow the Bates lead to 39-29 at the end of the half.
Down the homestretch, the Bobcats extended its lead back up to 15 for the 82-67 win. Lapointe led Bates with 16 points off the bench. Thurston and Bonkovsky each added 15 points, while first-year forward Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.) scored 12 points and picked up 12 rebounds.
Taylor was chosen as the NEWBA Player of the Week, the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week, and named to the ECAC Weekly Honor Roll. The Bobcats are ranked 7th in the latest NEWBA poll.

After seven road games to open the season, the Bobcats finally enjoyed
the rowdy support of the Alumni gym faithful with three home games this
week. In the opener on Jan. 14, the Bobcats routed Suffolk, 88-72, but
the weekend brought tougher competition. After pushing Hamilton into
overtime,
Bates lost 111-108 on Jan. 18 and fell to Skidmore, 97-88, on Jan. 19
despite
a 20-point lead in the second half. On a brighter note, senior guard Matt
Garvey (Amherst, Mass.) became the College's all-time leading scorer
against
Skidmore, the same team which he broke the 1,000 point mark against last
season. Garvey's free throw with 27 seconds left in the first half, which
gave him 1,601 career points, propelled him past Dave Kennedy '86 into
first place.
Against Suffolk, Bates established the first lead of the game four minutes in when Garvey scored eight straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Up 19-16 with 13 minutes to go, the Bobcats closed the half on a 24-13 run to take a 43-29 lead.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 88-72 in the second half to secure the victory. Garvey led Bates with 24 points. Senior forward Mike Marsh (Manchester, Conn.) added 14 points and 8 rebounds and first-year guard Ryan Emerson (Milford, N.H.) scored 10 points. Senior captain Jesse Strandberg (Steep Falls, Maine) had a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Bobcats got off to a slow start against the 6-1 Continentals on Jan. 18. Hamilton opened the game with a 20-6 run over the first six minutes. Led by some early baskets by Marsh and 18 first half points by Garvey Bates cut the Hamilton lead to 49-41 at the half.
By the time the Bobcats began their second half comeback with 8:42 left, the Continentals had extended their lead to 13 points. Behind a boisterous home crowd, Garvey led the comeback with 18 points, including 9-10 shooting from the line, as Bates outscored Hamilton 31-18 over the last nine minutes. Down 93-90 with 14.8 seconds remaining, Garvey tried to create a shot, only to be blanketed by Continental defenders. Despite the defensive pressure, Garvey spotted a wide-open Emerson, who nailed a 3-pointer from the corner to tie the game as time expired.
With their roster depleted by the foul-outs of Strandberg, Emerson, senior forward R.J. Jenkins (Winthrop, Maine), and sophomore forward Andy Hall (Forestdale, Mass.), the Bobcats struggled in overtime. Marsh and Garvey kept the game close with some clutch shooting, but the Hamilton duo of sophomore forward Michael Schantz (nine points in overtime) and senior forward Kevin Larson (five points in overtime) led the Continentals to a 111-108 victory.
Garvey led Bates with 48 points, a school-record, and 8 assists. Marsh added 27 points and Jenkins scored 11, while Strandberg grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
The following day, the Bobcats went up against Skidmore. The score went back and forth between the two teams early in the first half, but with 12 minutes remaining in the half, the Bobcats went on a 14-2 run over the next three minutes to turn a one point deficit into a 30-19 advantage. Thanks to 23 first half points by Garvey (including the free throw with 27 seconds left that earned him the scoring record), Bates led 48-34 at intermission.
Over the first five minutes of the second half, the Bobcats extended their lead to 20 points. As the Bobcats grew overconfident, carelessness arose and the Thoroughbreds gained momentum and 30-9 run over the next 8:30 to take a 72-71 lead. Skidmore held on, as Bates faded, for the 97-88 win.
Garvey, once again, led the Bobcats with 30 points, earning him NESCAC and MBCWA Co- Player of the Week and ECAC Weekly Honor Roll distinctions. Garvey currently leads the NESCAC in scoring, averaging 25.4 points per game. Marsh scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

College (M 126-115, W 123-85) on Jan. 18.
