Women's Basketball (6-2) Bonkovsky Leads Bates past Williams, Named NESCAC Player of the Week

Bates met Williams on neutral ground at Tufts University on Jan. 8. In a close game that saw neither team grab a lead of more than five points, the Bobcats walked away with a one-point victory, 62-61.

Despite shooting only 33 percent from the field in the first half while the Ephs shot at a 63 percent clip, the Bobcats headed to the lockerroom locked in a 33-33 tie. While Bates' shooting was off, its defense, led by sophomore Colleen McCrave's (Walpole, Mass.) nine steals, kept the Bobcats in the game.

In the second half, the Bobcats' horrific shooting continued, but the game remained close. With six seconds left, sophomore forward Amy Taylor (Orono, Maine) stepped to the line and hit two free throws to give Bates a 62-60 lead. Then, with three seconds left, first-year guard Jolene Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.) fouled a Williams player as she brought the ball up court. The Williams player sank the front end of the one-and-one, but missed the second and Thurston grabbed the rebound to ensure the 62-61 victory.

Sarah Bonkovsky (Harvard, Mass.) led all scorers with 16 points and eight rebounds and earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors. Thurston added 13 points and first-year guard Melissa LaPointe (Salem, N.H.) dropped in 10 points off the bench.

Men's Basketball (1-6) Picks up First Win Against New England College; Garvey Moves to Second Place on Bates Career Scoring List

After losing their sixth straight game to Colby on Jan. 8 64-51, the Bobcats picked up their first win of the season with a 72-51 rout of New England College on Jan. 11. After passing Sean McDonagh '92 with nine points against Colby, senior shooting guard Matt Garvey (Amherst, Mass.) scored a team-high 19 against NEC to give him 1,506 points in his career and move him past Howie Alexander '68 into second place among Bates career scoring leaders.

At Waterville, the Bobcats had a tough time getting organized against the 7-1 White Mules. Despite struggling early, the Bobcats remained close at the half, trailing by six, thanks to the heroics of first-year guard Ryan Emerson (Milford, N.H.). Making his first collegiate start, Emreson hit three 3-pointers in the first half, including one right at the buzzer with two Colby players draped all over him.

The White Mules ran off a 6-0 run to start the second half and increase their lead to 12 points, 40-28. The Bobcats never quite recovered from the deficit as fouling the Colby players proved ineffective and the White Mules held on to win 64-51.

Emerson led Bates scorers with 15 points. Garvey added nine points and 8 assists.

Against NEC, the Bobcats held the Pilgrims to only 24 points (on 7-33 shooting) in the second half to expand a seven point halftime lead to 21 points by the end of the game.

Garvey led the Bobcats with 19 points. Senior captain Jesse Strandberg (Steep Falls, Maine) added 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Andy Hall (Forrestdale, Mass.) had career highs in points and rebounds with 11 and nine, respectively.
