Women's Hoops Wins In Double Digits For First Time in Five Seasons
This week, the women's basketball team notched double figures in
wins
for the first time since the '90-'91 season with a victory over Colby,
76-
55, on January 24. The Bobcats ended the week with a tough, 87-46
loss
to the University of Maine at Farmington on the 29th.
The Bobcats never trailed the White Mules. First-year guard Colleen
McCrave scored 11 points in a 14-4 Bates run at the end of the first
half
to make the score 47-25, and essentially, put the game away. Colby
came
out in the second half and put together a 10-2 run to cut the lead to
14,
but that would be as close as Colby would get. Junior center Sarah
Bonkovsky led all scorers with 19 points and 18 rebounds, while
McCrave
and first-year A.T. Taylor added 18 and 14 points, respectively. Taylor,
for her performances against U.N.E. and Colby, was named Rookie of
the
Week by the NEWBA and MWBCA for the second time this season. It
was
the fourth time in six weeks that a Bates player has won the award
(McCrave won it twice, as well).
The Bobcats rode a three game win-streak into Farmington with the
hopes
of upsetting the Beavers, ranked second in the state of Maine.
Unfortunately, Bates got off to its worst start of the season. UMF
quickly
gained a 10-0 lead, forcing the Bobcats to call time-out with 17:17
left in
the half. Things did not get much better for Bates, as the Beavers
added a
21-12 run after the time-out, and at the half the socre was 45-25 in
favor of UMF. The Beavers continued to dominate in the second half,
and
the final score was 87-46. Taylor led Bates scorers with 13 points,
while
Bonkovsky and McCrave each added eight.

Men's Hoops Slips Back to .500
The men's basketball team had a rough week, dropping to 8-8,
sandwiching
losses to Colby on Jan. 23 and the University of Maine at Farmington
on
Jan. 29, around a Jan. 25 win over Emerson.
Bates and Colby traded baskets early in the game until, with 6:06 left
in
the first half, the White Mules put together a 21-3 run to lead 48-27
at
the half. The Bobcats came out in the second half and, led by a steal
by
senior guard Adam Piandes, outscored Colby 11-2 in the first 3:13 of
the
half to cut the lead to 12. The White Mules regained their composure
and
the closest Bates would get would be nine points on a three-pointer
by
junior guard Matt Garvey with 3:54 left in the game. Although Bates
outscored its opponent 45-38 in the second half, it was not enough to
erase Colby's first half run, and the White Mules claimed an 86-72
victory.
Bates was led by Garvey, who scored 16 points, and Piandes who
scored 8
points and dished out 14 assists.
Against the Lions, the Bobcats trailed 4-6 early in the first half before
three-pointers by junior forward Jon White and Piandes led Bates to a
10-
2 run and a 14-8 lead that they would never relinquish. The Lions kept
close, trading baskets with the Bobcats, but Bates was still able to
compile a 58-47 halftime lead. The second half was similar to the
first
and 10 points by Garvey in the last 4:12 iced the game for the
Bobcats.
Garvey led Bates scorers with 28 points while Piandes added 27 points
and 11 assists and White scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Bobcats put up a battle against the Beavers, but ultimately fell
81-73.
Down by 10, 37-27, at the half, Bates was able to put on a 14-0 run
about
six minutes in to tie the game, 45-45, with 13 minutes remaining. The
run was highlighted by eight points by junior forward R.J. Jenkins.
Fortunately, the Bobcats could never take the lead, and Farmington
took
the win from there. Bates was led by Piandes' 20 points, eight
assists,
and six rebounds and Garvey's 19 points and five boards.

Lightning Strikes Skiing Twice: St. Lawrence Carnival Partially Rained Out
Nordic was the victim this time, as the St. Lawrence Carnival lost the
mixed relay to rain. The Bates team performed well despite the
conditions, finishing sixth or better in four of the six events. In the
men's
17.5K cross-country, Bates skiers Justin Freeman (46:39.0) and David
Chamberlain (46:59.6) finished ninth and tenth respectively, leading
the
team to a fourth place finish with 89 points. Katie Gould's came in
22nd
with a time of 44:20.5 to lead the Bobcats women's 14k cross country
effort to sixth place with 67 points. The men's alpine team was led
once
again by senior Sean Clark who finished eighth in the giant slalom
(2:12.73) and 14th in the slalom (1:51.52). Teammate Kina Pickett
finished
16th in the giant slalom (2:15.82) and 22nd in the slalom (1:56.29),
just
ahead of the Bobcats' third finisher, Sandy Perrins (1:56.60). The men
finished fifth in both events, scoring 87 points in the G.S. and 85 in the
slalom. The women were not as successful, finishing eighth in the
slalom,
led by Jessica Cornwall's 28th place (1:34.22), and scoring no points in
the
giant slalom.

Men Place Third at Coast Guard, Dominate Throwing Events
The men's indoor track team placed third at the Coast Guard Academy
Men's Indoor Quad Cup Meet, just 11.5 points behind WPI. More than
one
third of the team's 120 points came in the throwing events. The
Bobcats
took four of the top five spots in the 35 lb. weight throw, with
Spencer
Potter winning the vent with a throw of 49' 5 3/4", Jon Eden coming
second at 48' 4", Sammy Martin third at 47' 7 1/4" and Billy McEvila in
fifth with a throw of 43' 10". In the shot put, Walter Jackson was
second
with a throw of 44' 7 1/4" and Martin was third with a throw of 42' 5
3/4". Other strong performances for the Bobcats came from Chip
Noble,
who won the 400m run with a time of 53.93; Peter Beeson, who took
second in the pole vault with a vault of 13' 0"; Darin Edler, who placed
third in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.46; and Steve Beardsley, who
placed third in the 800m run with a time of 2:01.97. The Bobcats even
their record at 4-4.

Women's Track Finishes Third at Challenge Cup
The women's indoor track team came in third in the New England
Challenge
Cup which they hosted on Saturday. The meet was won by Springfield
College with 225 points, followed by Colby College with 166 points,
Bates
with 95 points and Mouth Holyoke College with 86. Top performances
for
the Bobcats were turned in by Lindsey Hescock, who won the high
jump
with a leap of five feet, Meghan Lockwood, who won the 55-meter
dash
(7.65) and came in second in the 200-meter dash (27.86), senior
Kirsten
Achenbach, who won the 800-meter run (2:29.04) and came in second
in
the 1500-meter run (5:05.56), Christine Unger who placed second in
the
600-meter run (1:45.07). The Bobcats also got a win from the 4x800
relay
team of Achenbach, Amanda Bergstrom, Heather Alcock, and Unger.
The
team is now 2-4 in the indoor season.

Women Top Tufts; Burke Continues to Impress
The Bates women's swimming and diving team bested Tufts this
weekend,
197-102, while the men fell, 158-111, despite another fine
performance
by first-year diver David Burke.
The women topped Tufts in every event but three this weekend en
route to
an easy win. Senior Melissa Sander led the way in three different
freestyle events, the 100 (56.41), the 200 (2:03.83), and the 500
(5:34.35). Sophomore Denby Johnson also won three different events,
the
50 freestyle (25.93), the 200 backstroke (2:17.51) and the 100
individual
medley (1:05.48). Sophomore Jen Weiers also won more than one
event,
taking the 100 and 200 breaststroke (1:13.39 and 2:38.66). On the day,
five
Bates swimmers set personal bests, including junior Dawn Bilodeau,
who
won the 50 butterfly with a time of 29.57.
The men were undermanned against the Jumbos, but still had some
impressive personal performances. Once again, first-year diver David
Burke set school records in both 1M and 3M diving with scores of
263.75
and 266.75 respectively, the latter setting a Tarbell Pool record and
missing qualifying for nationals by just over one point. Other Bates
winners on the day were Damon Bowe in the 100 and 200 backstroke
(59.67 and 2:06.83) and Steve Simmons in the 50 butterfly (25.68).
Dave
Gair set three personal bests in the 200 butterfly (2:08.43), 200
backstroke (2:14.41) and 400 individual medley (4:38.60).
On the season, the women are 5-2 and have qualified 16 swimmers
for the
NCAA New England Championships. The men are 2-5 and have qualified

swimmers for New Englands.

Men's Squash Takes Three of Four from NESCAC Foes
The men's squash team won three of their four matches this week,
falling
to Bowdoin, 7-2, in Brunswick, before downing Connecticut College
and
Tufts, 8-1 each, and avenging an early season loss to Colby, 5-4. Eric
Sanders was 4-0 and dropped just one game on the week, while Case
Newberry, Ari Friedlander and Pat Cosquer were all 3-1. The Bobcats'
record is now 11-9.

Women's Squash Drops Under .500
The women's squash team dropped two of three this week, splitting at
Bowdoin with Bowdoin (L, 8-1) and Tufts (W, 6-3), before falling to
Colby
at home, 9-0. Junior Katie McQuilkin was the only Bates player with a
winning record on the week, going 2-1. The team now stands at 8-9.
