The men's outdoor track and field team won its first State of Maine championship since 1967, topping Bowdoin and Colby 71-60-60 in Brunswick April 13. Walter Jackson led the way for the Bobcats, winning the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, six inches and the discus with a throw of 133' 6". For his efforts, both of which qualified him for the NCAA New England Division III Championships, Jackson was co- recipient of the Frederick D. Tootell Memorial Award for outstanding field performer, marking the eighth time in the last 10 years that the award has been won by a Bates athlete. The Bobcats also got an outstanding performance from senior Darin Edler, who won the high jump with a leap of 6' 2" and the 110m high hurdles in 16.08 seconds, a New Englands qualifying time. Edler also scored in the 100m dash (4th, 11.82 seconds), the long jump (5th) and pole vault (5th) and was the lead led in the second place 4x100m relay team. In another good sign, MIT, who competed in a seperate quadrangular meet with the CBB school, finished just 21 points ahead of Bates without two of the Bobcats' top performers competing. The Engineers had finished 100 points ahead at Tufts the week before and the two teams will meet up again at Tufts next week.

With a limited team due to April break, the women's track team finsihed fourth at Colby behind the hosts, Bowdoin and MIT, who was just 2.5 points ahead of the Bobcats. Despite the small squad, there were several performances of note. First-year jumper A.T. Taylor set the school record in the long jump for the third straight week, winning the event with a leap of 16' 11". Senior Kirsten Achenbach and junior Heather Alcock finished second and third in the 800m in times of 2:225.68 and 2:31.74 respectively. Junior Kate Osborne took second in the discus with a toss of 98' 6", while first-year hurdler Erkia Bristol took second in the 100m hurdles at 17.15 seconds.

Women's Lacrosse Fights Trinity to the Wire

In an outstanding performance that wasn't decided until the last minute of the game, the women's lacrosse team fell to 1995 NCAA quaterfinalist Trinity, 16-15. The Bobcats scored first on a goal by junior first home Lydia Langford 1:01 into the game. The Bantams answered with four of the next five goals and had a 6-3 lead into the last five minutes of the first half. Bates responded, scoring the last three goals of the half, including first-year cetner Julie Lundman's only goal of the game with 13 seconds remaining. The teams swapped goals throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half, until Trinity established a 13-11 lead with 17:06 remaining. The Bobcats fought back, including three goals by senior tri-captain and third home Suzanna Baird in the last half of the second period, but it wasn't enough. Two key plays by Trinity stopped the Bobcats' momentum in the last five minutes. With five minutes remaining, Bates won a ground ball and was moving on the attack when a Trinity player intercepted a drop pass by Lundman and went in for the goal, putting the Bantams up 16-14. The Bobcats were able to answer 10 seconds later, but instead of tying the score , they were still down one. Then, with 40 seconds remaining in regulation, Langford had a open shot which was stopped with an outstanding save by the Trinity goalie. Langford led the way with four goals on the day, while Baird and senior tri-captain and left attack Jodi Kopke each had three goals. The Bobcats' record stands at 2-1.
