Women's Cross Country Places Second at Bowdoin Invitational
Junior Abigail Phelps (Chester, N.H.) took second place in a time of
19:13, just three seconds behind the leader, to head the Bobcats to a
second place finish in the Bowdoin Invitational. Bates finished behind
the hosts, who are ranked 10th in the most recent national polls, and
ahead of MIT and Babson. who are. First-year runner Tracy Lyford
(Portsmouth, N.H.) took seventh place in a time of 20:11, followed by
sophomore Lauren Nally (South Dennis, Mass., 9th place, 20:34),
senior co-captain Ilse Abusamra (Byfield, Mass., 10th place, 20:35)
and junior Kimberly Walker (Hampton, N.H., 12th place, 20:40).

Field Hockey (3-6) Takes Homecoming Win
The field hockey team picked up its second win in three games
during Back-to-Bates Weekend, topping the University of the South,
2-1, on Oct. 12. Earlier in the week, the Bobcats fell to the University
of Maine-Farmington, 3-0.
At Farmington, the Bobcats gave up one goal midway through the
first period, but could not recover in the second half, as they lost, 3-
0. Sophomore goalkeeper Wendy Zimmerman (Denver, Colo.) made
10 saves, but it was not enough. The Bobcats were outshot 24-8 for
the game.
The Bobcats welcomed Bates alumna Jane Chapman Kern '87 for
homecoming as head coach of the University of the South.
Unfortunately for her, her alma mater was not very forgiving. After
a scoreless first half, first-year forward Kate Orellana (Middlebury,
Vt.) took a feed from sophomore forward Amanda Schall (Chevy
Chase, Md.) and put it home five minutes into the second stanza.
Eight minute later, junior Jessica Klein (Montpelier, Vt.) converted a
pass from sophomore halfback Emily Bloom (Greenwich, Conn.) into
an insurance goal, which Bates needed when the Tigers snapped
Zimmerman's shutout bid with six minutes remaining. The Bobcats
hung on for the 2-1 victory behind Zimmerman's third straight 10-
save performance.

Football (0-4) Fall Victim to Wesleyan Rushing Attack
For the second time in three weeks, the Bobcats jumped out to an
early lead but saw their opponents run away with the game -
literally, as they were outgained on the ground by a 273 to 115
margin overall- in the second half, falling to Wesleyan, 37-16, on
Back-to-Bates Weekend.
After making no gain on the first two plays of their second
possession of the game, the Bobcats offense kicked in, gaining 80
yards in just four plays, including a 38-yard run by junior running
back P.J. McGrail (Westwood, Mass.) and who also picked up an 8-
yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Dan Hooley
(Bristol, Conn.). The extra point attempt was blocked, but the Bobcats
had a 6-0 lead.
Two possessions later, after the Bates defense had taken over on
downs at their own 30-yard line, the Bobcats mounted one of their
best drives of the season. They converted on a pair of 3rd and long
situations, as their two senior wide receivers executed timing
patterns to perfection. Wyatt Crosswhite (West Hartford, Conn.)
converted a third and 17 play from the Bates 24 with a 24-yard
catch, while Tom Spiro (Randolph, Mass.) gained 18 yards on a third
and five. Two plays later, Hooley found Spiro for 32 yards to the
Wesleyan nine-yard line. On the next play, however, the Cardinals
picked up their only sack of the game in a key spot, hitting Hooley
for a 12-yard loss. The Bobcats only came away with a field goal by
first-year kicker Rob Sanderson (Gainesville, Fla.) after a 12-play,
four and a half minute drive. They led 9-0 with less than a minute
gone in the second period.
On Wesleyan's second drive of the quarter, they picked up 49 yards
on the first play of the drive and scored on a run three plays later to
get to 9-7. They added a field goal after on their next possession
after 11 plays and 3:28 to take the lead,10-9, going into the half.
They extended that lead to 16-9 on the first play of the third quarter
on a 66-yard run, the first of two Cardinal scoring plays that came
from their own side of the field. The Bobcats' next drive failed
despite a roughing the passer call, and Wesleyan drove 62 yards in
seven plays to go up 23-9. The Bobcats pulled to within 23-16 after
Hooley found senior tight end Jared Libby (Clinton, Maine) for a 19-
yard touchdown, but that was as close as the Bobcats would get.
The women's soccer team remained undefeated with an easy 3-0 win
over Maine-Farmington on Oct. 12. They remain ranked 4th in New
England, though they dropped out of the national polls.
Sophomore forward Colleen McCrave (Walpole, Mass.) notched her
fifth goal of the season just under nine minutes into the game on an
assist by senior fullback Kathleen Swinbourne (Topsham, Maine).
Seven minutes later, McCrave added an assist on a goal by first-year
halfback Jolene Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.). Sophomore forward tracy
Barbaro (North Haven, Conn.) finished out the scoring at the 38-
minute mark on an unassisted goal. The goalkeeping tandem of
sophomore Suzia Arnold (Falmouth, Mass.) and senior Shannon
Walker were relatively untested, stopping four shots between them
for their third combined shutout of the season, the team's fifth
overall.

Men's Soccer (3-4) Doesn't Pull 1-2 Sweep
After upsetting Williams, ranked No. 1 in New England, at home the
previous week, the Bobcats were unable to knock off second-ranked
Wheaton on the road on Oct. 12, losing 4-1.
The game got off to a good start, with senior midfielder Doug Steele
(East Longmeadow, Mass.) picking up an unassisted goal at the 23:26
mark of the first half to put Bates up, 1-0. It was Steele's first tally
of
the season. The Lyons answered less than five minutes later to tie
the game and took the lead for good with seven minutes to play in
the half. Wheaton added two more goals in the second half, less than
three minutes apart to secure the win. Though the Bobcats outshot
Wheaton 10-9, the Lyons goaltenders stopped 9 shots, while senior
Mike Marsh (Manchester, Conn.) only grabbed five.
The Bobcats' trip to Husson on Oct. 9 has been rescheduled for this
Tuesday.

Men's Tennis Hosts Bates Invitational, Kend Reaches Both Finals
At home for Back-to-Bates weekend, sophomore Brian Kend (Palos
Verdes Estates, Calif.) used the home-court advantage to reach the
finals of both the singles and doubles draw. After losing just eight
games in his first three matches, Kend faced the draw's top seed, Ben
Greenberg from Brandeis in the semifinals. Greenberg had defeated
Kend earlier in the season. After dropping the first set, 3-6, Kend
rallied to take the next two, 6-3, 6-1. In the other half of the draw,
junior captain Lonnie Klein (Riverdale, N.Y.) had an easy time
through the first two rounds. He was tested in the first set of the
third mtach before winning, 7-5, 6-1. In the semifinals, Klein took
second seed and eventual champion Clem Dobbins of Bowdoin,
ranked in the top ten in the East region, to three sets before bowing,
6-4, 4-6, 2-6. Dobbins took the final over Kend, 6-4, 6-1.
In the doubles tournament, Kend and Klein teamed up to reach the
finals again. They lost just six games in the first two matches, a pair
of best of 17 sets. In the semifinals, Kend took out Greenberg again,
topping the team from Brandeis in a struggle, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. In the
finals, the top-seeded team from Middlebury was victorious, 6-4, 6-
3.
Women's Tennis (4-4) Dumped by Bowdoin
In their only match of the week, the women's tennis team fell back
to the break even mark, losing to Bowdoin, 9-0.

Volleyball (6-16) Sneaks Past Colby, Gets Swept at ECSU
Invitational
The Bobcats won another thrilling match against Colby on Oct. 9,
going five games before winning, 15-11, 11-15, 13-15, 15-4, 16-14.
Senior co-captain and setter Tasha Hawthorne (Belton, Mo.) had an
outstanding match, with 39 assists, 12 digs and a .667 attack
percentage. Senior co-captain and hitter Sundra Durkis (Durham,
N.H.) registered 17 kills. Things were not so exciting at the Eastern
Connecticut State Invitational, where Bates managed to win just one
of ten games played. Two of their three opponents, Cortland State
and Coast Guard, were ranked number one in their region and in the
top 15 nationally. The third, and more even match, was with MIT,
who defeated the Bobcats, 9-15, 11-5, 15-12, 7-15.
