Programs for Teachers

The fifteenth annual summer institute for high school teachers of physics

July 28 - August 2, 2002

Overview
This program is an intensive, one-week, residential institute intended for high school physics teachers from Maine and other eastern states. The program features teaching methods and strategies developed by four veteran physics teachers. Activities are intended to fine-tune the skills of the veteran teacher or to retrofit the teacher whose training is in some discipline other than physics. All Institute activities are connected to the performance indicators listed for physics in Maine Learning Results.

The target number of participants is twenty.

The Program

The Institute, now in its second decade, will feature mainstream high school topics delivered in novel ways. Institute planners have prepared a series of activities that pay significant attention to:

  • Classroom demonstrations
  • Laboratory activities
  • Computer applications that support the curriculum
  • Problem solving techniques, especially those used in Advanced Placement programs
  • Alignment with Maine Learning Results

Participants will be encouraged to bring with them a favorite activity or demonstration to share with the group.

The Faculty

The four members of the institute staff are all veteran Maine physics teachers  who skillfully combine more than 100 years of teaching experience with the newest innovations in the physics classroom.

The Facility
The Bates campus provides an intimate setting for this weeklong program. All class work will be conducted at the Carnegie Science Center. Carnegie was renovated in 1990 and provides a spacious and comfortable place to work. The meal plan at Commons is first rate and offers a varied menu suitable to every palate. Dormitory accommodations are single occupancy in a building close to Carnegie and to Commons.

Credit
This institute carries 4.5 CEU's (Continuing Education Units) from Bates College.  For recertification purposes, 4.5 CEU's commonly translate into 3 credits.

Costs
Tuition for this program is $425. (This fee may be underwritten, in whole or in part, by local collective bargaining agreements or by local Eisenhower grant funds.  Participants should consult their supervisors for funding assistance.) Room and board is free to participants paying full tuition.

An initial deposit of $50 should accompany your application and will be applied to tuition costs. This sum will be returned if the institute is subsequently canceled. Make checks payable to SUMMER PHYSICS INSTITUTE.
