Nishani Frazier
Nishani Frazier is a doctoral student in the history department at Columbia University. Her dissertation will
examine the public and private life of Ralph David Abernathy and his subsequent withdrawl from the civil rights
movement community. Ms. Frazier served as personal and administrative assistant to Dr. John Hope Franklin for
two years, including acting as his special assistant during his tenure as chair of President Clinton's Advisory
Commission on Race. She has also worked as an archivist and researcher for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Center for Social Change and as an intern with the Anacostia Museum. Recently, she co-organized the one-day
symposium, Black Feminism 2000 under the auspices of the Institute for Research in African American Studies
at Columbia University. In addition, she is co-editor with Dr. Manning Marable on the forthcoming anthology,
Columbia Reader on African American History.
